Zack Cody Jordin Sparks Song

express Native speaking and silence

We Indians know about silence. We are not afraid. In fact for us is more powerful than words.

Our elders were schooled in the ways of silence, and they will pass that knowledge on to us. See, hear, and then act, they said. That is the way of life.

Watch the animals to see how they care for their young. Notes to the elders to see how they behave. Watch the white man to see what he wants. Always watch first, with heart and mind still, and then learn. When you've seen enough, then you act.

With you is the opposite. You learn speaking. Reward the Children who speak more in school. In their parties all trying to talk. At work they are always having meetings where everyone interrupt you all, and everyone is talking five, ten or a hundred times. And they call it "solving a problem." When in a room and there is silence, they get nervous. They have to fill the space with sound. So speak impulsively, even before knowing what to say.

A white people like to argue. Not even allow the other to finish a sentence. Always interrupted. For the Indians this is very disrespectful and even stupid. If you start talking, I'm not going to interrupt you. I'll listen. You may leave to listen if I do not like what you're saying. But I will not interrupt you. When finished, I will take my decision on what you said, but will not tell you if I agree, unless that's important. Otherwise, I just stay quiet and walk away. You told me I need to know. There is nothing more to say. But that's not enough for most white people.

People should think about their words as seeds. Should consider, and then allow them to grow in silence. Our elders taught us that the earth is always talking, but we must remain silent to listen.
